Eight

Philip stands at the edge of the balcony, looking out onto the palace grounds with his back to me. It's not the first time I've found him like this, and I assume it's because of what he's said about the differences between our kingdoms and the fertility of the soil.

"Philip," I say.

He turns slowly, smiling slightly when he sees me. "So you're not avoiding me anymore."

"I haven't been avoiding you," I counter. "I only got back an hour ago."

"Got back from where?"

I glance over my shoulder at the palace. Guards stand not far away from us, and there are dozens of servants within listening distance. While I trust the people who work at the palace, I'm not foolish enough to think they won't be reporting anything they deem to be suspicious back to my parents.

Or worse, to someone else. We pay our servants well, but Alventia is a prosperous kingdom. Other people are able to pay them decent bribes on top of that.

"Why don't we take a walk," I suggest.

Confusion flits over his face, but he nods and holds out his arm. I take it, and the two of us head down into the gardens.

"I went to see Finette again," I admit once we're safely away from the listening ears. The guards will still be able to see us at this distance, but they won't be able to hear what we're saying. "I know I should have asked you to come, but I didn't want to risk her not helping again."

"I understand." There's a note of hurt in his voice, but I don't think it's aimed at me.

"She thinks she's found a potion that'll break the curse."

"But she said she couldn't help."

"I don't think she could when we visited. I think she's found it since. At least, that's the impression I got from the amount of mess in her house."

He raises an eyebrow. "I don't think mess has ever been something I associate with her."

"No, it was a little off-putting," I agree. "It didn't feel like the room belonged to her."

"How long will it take for her to brew the potion?" Philip asks.

I can't deny the relief I feel at him not being too insulted by me going to Finette behind his back. Maybe he got the signals that Finette wasn't too trusting of him too. She wasn't particularly subtle about it.

"She says a month. But only after we manage to get the final ingredient for it."

"We? That doesn't sound good."

"That depends how closely your father guards his jewels."

Philip stops walking and turns to me with a serious expression on his face. "My father? That's not an option."

"Then in another eight months, I'm going to find myself trapped in a century of sleep."

"We wouldn't stop trying to find a way to free you from it," he promises.

"And I appreciate that, but how can we rely on that when we don't know what will happen if I'm woken up before the end of my curse? For all I know, it could kill me.
